The Ypma Organ
The glorious Ypma Organ was installed in 1910. The organ was built around 1835 in Bolsward by the famous organ builder Ypma. It was bought by the Reformed Church Council of Wierum in 1909. From 1910 onwards, Eben Haëzer became its home. Interestingly, the organ as we know it today is one section of the original from Bolsward. The fate of the other half is currently unknown. If you know where the other half might be, we would dearly love to hear from you - who knows, perhaps one day they will be re-united!
In 1961, the organ was restored by the Brothers Reil from Heerde. The wind system was moved into the organ case and the organ gained a free 27-tone pedal with the registers subbas 16’ and Octave 8’. In 1979 the family Reil visited the organ once more, replacing several registers and leading to the disposition the organ still holds to this day:
Manuaal: Prestant 8’. Roerfluit 8’.Gamba 8’. Vioolprestant 8’ disc. Octaaf 4’. Fluit 4’. Quint 3’. Octaaf 2’. Sifflet 1’. Mixtuur 3 – 5 sterk en Tremulant.
Pedaal: Subbas 16’. Octaaf 8’ en pedaalkoppel.
In 1982, the organ received its final restoration, this time of its wind chest and the wood carvings on the front. The restoration was conducted by Mense Ruiter from Zuidwolde. Ornaments were placed upon the towers and the pipes were in places gilded, in keeping with what must have been its original composition.
This is how the organ remains today, regularly dusted by its new owners.

The Ypma Organ is Eben Haëzer’s crowning glory. It was an important wish of Jacob and Jannie Bijlsma that the organ should remain in working order, and this is a wish we share.
If you are an organist happening to pass by on one of our open days, we warmly invite you to come in and play! If we are not in the church itself (which we likely are!), please ring the bell next to the front door, then we will come and unlock the door to the organ for you.
